Nicholas G. LaBella is a retired Supervising Investigator with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigations, where he supervised the Major Crimes Division and led a team of investigators and investigative technicians assigned to homicide, gang, cold case, and vehicular homicide matters. In this role, he directed high-profile and sensitive investigations, reviewed casework, assigned investigative priorities, coordinated search warrant operations, prepared statistical reporting for executive leadership, and collaborated closely with prosecutors on filing decisions and prosecution strategy.
Prior to his supervisory role, LaBella served as a Senior District Attorney Investigator, handling a broad range of criminal investigations including homicide, violent crime, organized theft and fraud, public corruption, narcotics, and other major felony cases. His assignments included Court Operations, the Public Integrity Unit, and multiple regional gang task forces, where he worked closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners. He also served in acting supervisory capacities and provided training in tactical operations, investigative techniques, and outlaw motorcycle gang investigations.
LaBella began his law enforcement career with the Beaumont Police Department, progressing from Reserve Police Officer to Police Officer, Detective, and eventually Police Sergeant. His early career included patrol supervision, criminal investigations, narcotics enforcement, undercover operations, surveillance, and participation in a multi-agency narcotics task force.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education and Development and an Associate of Science in Behavioral Science. His professional record includes POST supervisory and advanced certifications, homicide and officer-involved shooting investigation training, narcotics and clandestine laboratory certifications, and recognition as Investigator of the Year for his work on a capital homicide prosecution.
LaBella has extensive experience investigating and supervising complex criminal matters, including homicide, gang crimes, public corruption, narcotics, organized theft and fraud, violent crime, and other major felony cases. His work includes evidence analysis, witness and suspect interviews, search warrant preparation, court testimony, and prosecution support.
As a Supervising Investigator and former Police Sergeant, LaBella managed investigative and patrol personnel, assigned caseloads, reviewed reports, established priorities, and provided direction during critical incidents. He also developed reporting systems, monitored performance metrics, and mentored investigators in both day-to-day operations and specialized investigative practices.
LaBella’s career includes significant interagency work through regional gang task forces, narcotics enforcement teams, and joint investigations involving local, state, and federal partners. His experience reflects strong coordination skills in high-risk operations, intelligence gathering, tactical planning, and collaborative case development.
